Familiar with some of Gordon’s earlier work, Maureen appreciated his ability to create works of art that were highly tailored to the site where they were installed. In 2014, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, led by then-CEO, Maureen Riley, engaged Gordon Huether in the project. Part of stakeholders’ approach to the project was to incorporate architecturally integrated artwork early on in the design to create a beautiful and enriching environment for their 20 million passengers each year. Ames produced all aggregates for the roadways and installed a sanitary sewer pump station and two duplex submersible force main systems. In 2012 the Salt Lake City Department of Airports began plans for the Airport Redevelopment Program to create a state-of-the-art airport experience at the Salt Lake City International Airport and secure its position as a global aviation hub for decades to come. Site Enabling: Crews performed demolition work and installation of utilities for the new terminal, central utility plant, and concourse, along with the demolition of rental car facilities and installation of temporary roadways. The project scope also included backfill of the utility and pedestrian tunnel under the new terminal. Site Work: Working in a small construction footprint, crews performed excavation and backfill of grade beams, pile caps, and stem walls for the new concourse and terminal. Ames’ white paving crew placed 62,000 cubic yards of concrete and 20,000 cubic yards of lean concrete base to open the taxiways on time. Crews worked five to six days a week amid live air traffic to keep the taxiway projects moving forward. White Paving: In 2022, crews performed white paving projects that opened a two-way taxiway connecting the airport’s two new terminals and repaired and realigned a second taxiway that feeds all of the airport’s terminals from one of the runways. The $1.8 billion terminal reconstruction effort is proceeding while the airport remains operational, requiring Ames and other contractors to work around airport traffic, in-use facilities, and air operations. Ames Construction has been on site at Salt Lake City International Airport since 2016, performing multiple work packages for the airport’s massive redevelopment project.
